Assessment used to evaluate inner-ear, particularly cochlear, function.
Otoacoustic Emissions (O.A.E.) Testing
Otoacoustic Emissions (O.A.E.) testing is an important audiological assessment used to evaluate the function of the inner ear, particularly the activity of the cochlea. It is commonly used as part of hearing assessment for babies, children and adults when clinically appropriate.
The cochlea contains specialized sensory cells that respond to sound. When these cells function normally, the inner ear can produce very soft sounds known as otoacoustic emissions. An O.A.E. test detects these responses using a small probe placed gently in the ear canal.
One of the major advantages of O.A.E. testing is that it is generally quick and does not require the patient to actively respond by pressing a button or raising a hand. This makes it particularly useful in situations where conventional hearing tests may be difficult, including certain assessments involving infants and young children.
At Jay Speech & Hearing, O.A.E. testing may be recommended as part of a broader hearing evaluation depending on the individual's age, symptoms and clinical requirements. The test can provide useful information about cochlear function and may be used alongside other assessments for a more complete understanding of hearing status.
Parents may be advised to consider hearing evaluation when they have concerns about a child's response to sound, speech and language development, or other communication milestones. Adults may also require audiological evaluation when experiencing hearing difficulties or other concerns.
It is important to understand that an O.A.E. result is only one part of the overall assessment process. A hearing professional may recommend additional tests such as Audiometry, BERA or Impedance depending on the individual's circumstances.
Our team aims to make the testing experience as comfortable and understandable as possible while explaining the purpose of the assessment and the meaning of the findings.
If you or your child has a hearing-related concern, an appropriate audiological evaluation can be an important first step toward understanding the issue.
